Solio Lodge Kenya
Solio Lodge is famed as a lodge in Kenya for its unique and mind-blowing rhino viewing experiences. Tucked in the valley between the lofty slopes of Mount Kenya and the peaks of the Aberdare Mountains, it is the only guest accommodation on the incredible 45,000-acre Solio Game Reserve. Internationally recognised as one of the most successful private rhino breeding sanctuaries in East Africa, visitors will find that sightings of up to 40 rhinoceros at a time are not uncommon. The wildlife experience here is intense and exclusive: 19,000 acres of conservancy surrounded by a 45,000 acre ranch and just one luxury lodge.

Solio Double Cottages
Solio Lodge’s five cottages provide the only guest accommodation on Solio Game Conservancy, so if you’re seeking Laikipia luxury lodges with high levels of exclusivity and intimacy, then this comes out top. Spread out along the southern tip of Solio Conservancy, each cottage faces east towards Mount Kenya, the craggy peaks of which can often be glimpsed in the mornings. Private decks look out onto nature, enabling guests to fully unwind in the comfort of their own secluded cottage.
Each of our luxury cottages provide sumptuous sleeping and relaxation spaces. High thatched roofs and floor-to-ceiling glass windows create a lovely feeling of space and bring the outdoors in, with pot plants to compliment the natural outlook. Whilst the bedrooms and bathrooms are expansive, open fireplaces in both rooms create a cosy atmosphere. Double-ended freestanding bathtubs and huge rain showers come as standard, along with double sinks, ample wardrobe space and comfortable seating areas. All our cottages are spacious enough to accommodate a baby cot or an additional third bed for a child if required, although this must be prearranged when booking your stay.
For guests with less mobility, we recommended booking Cottage 3 as this is near to the central dining area. This is also the best suited cottage for accommodating wheelchair users. Cottage 1 is furthest away from the main mess area down a gravel pathway. All cottages share the same outlook and amenities. Cottages 2, 3, 4 and 5 are able to be configured as twin beds as well as double beds, whilst Cottages 1 and 6 are doubles only.
Solio Family Cottages
Solio is an ideal option for families seeking luxury Laikipia accommodation. With ample, flat green garden space around each of our cottages and main mess area, it’s a great safe space in which children can run wild and play games. Our family unit is comprised of Cottages 5 and 6 which are interconnected by a shared lounge. The accommodation is more than spacious, with a large double en-suite and a large twin en-suite room joined in the middle by a comfortable seating area. Each bedroom enjoys beautiful views out onto the game sanctuary through the floor-to-ceiling glass doors, which open onto a sundeck and garden area, perfect for a spot of yoga or meditation. Enjoy a morning tea or coffee with a homemade cookie in bed whilst gazing out onto nature and listening to birdsong. Both bathrooms have freestanding tubs and large walk-in showers, whilst both bedrooms have their own fireplaces and separate access from the outside if required
Our family cottage is also the ideal Laikipia accommodation for groups of friends who enjoy being together. The shared fireplace and lounge area are perfect for socialising and relaxing in with loved ones. If the family cottage unit is not available on your requested dates, then our double cottages are more than spacious enough to accommodate extra beds for children by prior arrangement when booking.
Safari Activities
Game Drives
Enjoy peaceful morning, afternoon and evening game viewing in one of Kenya’s least busy private game reserves. The wildlife is abundant, making for easy and plentiful sightings. It also means there is no need to rush out first thing, unless you want to, of course! Spend time with the prolific numbers of black and white rhino and spot four out of the ‘big five’ (there are no elephants at Solio as they have been purposely fenced out to preserve the vegetation for the endangered black rhino). Reticulated giraffe, eland, waterbuck, lion, leopard, cheetah and many other species can all be spotted.
Guests at Solio benefit from unique roof top benches on our safari vehicles which offer the ultimate, uninterrupted game viewing. Our customised 4 x 4s are also kitted out with ponchos, suncream, drinks and wildlife books – everything to keep you happy during a game drive.
Exclusive use of game drive vehicle is included for all guests staying at Solio Lodge.
Helicopter Rides
Gain a whole new perspective on Kenya’s incredible landscape by taking one of our thrilling scenic helicopter excursions. Fly between the jagged snow-capped peaks of Africa’s second highest mountain, land beside shimmering glacial lakes, glide through dramatic rocky gorges and soar alongside pink flamingos. A helicopter trip is the ultimate freedom and opportunity to discover some of Kenya’s most remote and inaccessible locations.
From Solio Lodge, there are a number of exciting helicopter trips you can choose from. Click here to check out some of the awesome itineraries we’ve put together with our heli pilot, or alternatively, create your own. Helicopter trips to the top of Mount Kenya and the Aberdare National Park for a spot of fly fishing in some of the crystal-clear mountain streams and lakes are great fun for avid anglers. The age limit for helicopter rides is 2 years.
Sundowner
Sundowners are an essential part of any safari experience. A chance to step out of the vehicle and connect with the wild, reflecting on the day’s activities with your loved ones
Solio’s sundowner experience is complimented by our awesome mobile bar, Jolene, upcycled from an old horsebox and fully stocked with everything needed for the perfect evening drinks and canapes.
We’ll set Jolene up in a picturesque acacia grove in time for you to watch the horizon turn different shades of glowing pink and orange as the sun sinks low in the sky. Our guests are frequently joined by rhinos and large journeys of giraffe moving silently through the dusk, making for a magical experience.
Bush Breakfast
Set off on a morning game drive to experience the sanctuary coming to life. This is often the best time for interesting wildlife encounters and also for capturing the jagged peaks of Mount Kenya before they are enveloped in cloud.
The best thing about a bush breakfast is that it is totally flexible. You can decide when it’s time to stop and your guide will find the perfect spot with a great view from which to cook up a feast
The Lodge vehicles are specially designed with pull out stoves so that guests can enjoy eggs, omelettes and pancakes cooked to order.
Horse Riding
The Lodge lovely stables are home to six horses, five for your use and one for the guide who will accompany you. Riders of all abilities can enjoy Solio Ranch on horseback. For more experienced riders, there are some beautiful open plains to canter across.Helmets are compulsory and provided at the stables
This activity takes place outside of the core rhino conservancy, but there is still plenty of wildlife to encounter, including zebra, impala, warthog and giraffes.It is often possible to get a little closer to some of the animals on horseback compared to on foot.
Cycling
The Lodge have mountain bikes available for adults and children to use at any time. Head out with one of the lodge guides to discover more about the flora and fauna around you
Cycling is a great way to get some exercise whilst also appreciating the beautiful scenery of Solio Ranch.Although cycling takes place outside the core rhino sanctuary, there is still lots of wildlife to encounter. We have various options for shorter or longer circuits, depending on how energetic you are feeling.

Indulge in one of our pampering spa treatments cocooned in the comfort of your private cottage. Our fully trained therapist will create the optimal environment for you to completely unwind and rejuvenate beside a warming fire in the sanctuary of your room. We use products by Healing Earth, a premium organic spa brand inspired by ancient African healing traditions and botanicals.
WOOD-FIRED SAUNA
Visit our custom-built sauna, nestled in the tranquil surrounds of the lodge gardens. One end of the sauna is a large glass window with stunning views over the Solio Reserve and Mount Kenya beyond. Animals often wonder in and out of view, making this the hottest way we’ve discovered to view wildlife yet.
Walking Safaris
Walks take place on Solio Ranch, just outside the core fenced rhino sanctuary, but there is still plenty of wildlife to encounter. Amble alongside zebra, waterbuck, impala, warthogs and an abundance of birdlife.
Accompanied by an experienced guide you can learn how to identify and understand the behaviour of animals you see. Discover traditional medicinal properties of plants you come across and look out for the signs of the wild, such as dung middens, scent marking and paw prints.
For Children
Children will find that there is a lot to keep them entertained on a Laikipia safari in Solio Lodge. In addition to exciting animal encounters and the activities on offer, younger guests might enjoy joining our chefs in the kitchen to learn a few culinary skills or they can choose to go on an evening game walk with their guide around camp to spot some of our nocturnal creatures.
The Lodge younger guests often love to spend a few hours with the friendly guides who can teach them about simple bush craft and fun facts about our wildlife.Also Solio Lodge has lots of open green space for running around in and is ideal for children who love nature and exploring the great outdoors.

CHILDREN Children are ages 3 to 15 years inclusive. 16 years and over is an adult. 2 years and under is an infant. Infants stay FOC. Extra beds are available on request. We recommend parents book the family cottage as it has a shared central area where families can enjoy time together. However, the other cottages can comfortably fit 2 extra beds for children should the family cottage not be available. This is subject to occupancy levels at the lodge so please always ask a reservation consultant should you wish to request this. Baby-listeners and special meals are by prior arrangement.

The child sharing in an extra bed rate is based upon the following instances:
- A child (or children if more than one extra bed is needed, aged 3yrs to 11yrs inclusive) sharing a room with two others (whether it be adults or children) on an extra bed. This is a third person rate for children.
CHECK OUT Guests need to be out of their rooms by 10:00 am, although they can continue to use the rest of the lodge facilities. Please note that extra lunches are charged at US$ 46 per person.

ROOM TYPES Solio has 5 individual cottages. The 5th cottage is a family unit and has 2 en-suite bedrooms sleeping up to 5 people. Each cottage is very large and can comfortably accommodate 2 adults and 2 children in extra beds. Extra beds are on request only. The en-suite bathrooms have a bath and shower with a separate loo.
