Ol Malo is so much more than a safari lodge. At Ol Malo, they specialize in achieving your wildest dreams. Whether this is your first taste of Kenya or your dozenth journey back, ol Malo tailor-make each experience so no two trips are alike. The Lodge offer you the reins to live out your own adventure and will leave flexibility in your itinerary to flow with the rhythm of the day.
Built by the Francombe family in 1992 with help from the Samburu community and using locally sourced dead olive wood, Ol Malo Lodge was one of the first lodges to promote the “Bush Homes” concept. The welcoming sitting room with its open fireplace has been privy to many evenings of story telling by The Francombes. The dining room has dramatic views over terraced lawns leading up to the edge of the escarpment and on a clear day, all the way to Mt. Kenya. A cliff top infinity pool, one of the first built in Kenya, together with the pool house creates an ideal environment to spend an afternoon watching the activity at the watering hole and salt lick below the lodge.
Situated along the edge of the escarpment, maximising the expansive views, Ol Malo Lodge has three ensuite one-bedroomed cottages and a two-bedroomed family cottage with a shared bathroom.
Using local and sustainable materials the spacious cottages were built to blend with the natural landscape. The interior decor is tasteful, complemented with bead work from the Samburu Trust that Ol Malo supports. Large picture windows frame a wild and constantly changing landscape.
Ol Malo House sits on the edge of an escarpment on a privately-owned family ranch and game sanctuary in Kenya’s wild Northern Laikipia Province, the heartland of the Samburu tribe.
Life at Ol Malo is about experiences. Rise with the sun, soar alongside eagles over granite outcrops, and watch a family of elephant dozing under a tree through the pricked ears of your horse. Hear the crunch of rock under your camels feet, dance in the dust with warriors singing tales of the past, listen to stories of Africa under an Acacia tree whilst eating smoky toast freshly cooked on the coals of a fire. Retire to bed in rooms inspired by the architecture of the land or under canvas with a blanket of stars, lulled to sleep by silence.
Catering for up to 12 guests Ol Malo House is a perfect place for families or large groups to stay. Ideally taken on an exclusive basis the activities are plentiful – endless walks, camel and horse rides, mountain biking, picnics by the river and game drives, are just some of the activities available to take part in on the ranch.
Similar to the Lodge, the House was designed and built by the Francombes particularly with multi-generational travel in mind. With the input from all the family, the design and building and finishing of the house has every need catered for. Guests of the Francombes and their extended family have the opportunity to witness Kenya through the eyes and minds of those who know and love the land.
Andrew and Chyulu Francombe have created Ol Malo Nomad, a collection of tailor made experiences enchanting people deeper into this magical country. Accessing areas with their helicopter, team of camels, sure-footed horses and knowledge from the ancient tribes, experience some of Kenya’s most untouched wild spaces and smile with the wildest of faces.
From this amazing location one is at adventure’s doorstep. To the West, snakes the Great Rift Valley with her flamingo pools, lava flows and painted deserts. Samburu-land spreads North and East. Explore dramatic rivers of sand, rocky valleys and singing wells.
Ol Malo Nomad also offers guests the opportunity to get more involved and support the Samburu eco-system through the Samburu Trust to secure the land, its wildlife and a shared future.
Ol Malo has ideal accommodations for families with kids of all ages. From swimming pools and ping pong competitions to beginners horseback riding and spear throwing with a Samburu Warrior, your children will have no shortage of wonders to discover.
