Angama Mara-“Between Heaven and Earth”

A lovely safari lodge balanced on the rim of Africa’s Great Rift Valley, where the sky melts into the endless plains in a vista so wide it takes your breath away. Where the romance of canvas combines with dramatic guest areas, Angama Mara’s distinctive design breaks away from a traditional safari lodge style.

Perched right on the edge of the escarpment, each of Angama Mara’s spacious 100 sqm Tented Suites has floor-to-ceiling glass spanning all along the front to make the most of the dramatic views. The interiors are uncluttered, classic and above all, comfortable with splashes of Maasai Red, French Khaki, copper and brass.

Why Mara Angama?

  • Spacious Tented Suites, which have been designed for guests’ comfort and are reminiscent of a classical African safari, each with a view as lovely as the next
  • Perfectly cooked and presented dishes using the best local ingredients
  • Guests staying at Angama Mara are faced with many choices of how they wish to spend their day. Sunrise hot-air balloon safaris, photographing Africa’s abundant wildlife, walking on the edge of the Great Rift Valley, or visiting a Maasai family in their home – these are just a few of the adventures on offer.

Angama Mara Hotel-Accommodation

Suites

Angama Mara’s elegant tented suites have been designed to make the most of the extraordinary views of the Maasai Mara from every angle – from the bed, the bath, the sitting area, the shower and even the w/c. With the front of the tents featuring floor-to-ceiling glass, the roof and other three sides are canvas – classic safari olive on the outside and cream on the inside for romance. Spanning over 100 sqm, the tented suites all include spacious decks for in-room dining massage treatments and red rocking chair safaris.

Game drives

A game drive into the Mara Triangle is at the heart of your safari holiday. Shortly after leaving the lodge, you’re in vast grasslands dotted with acacias, surrounded by more animals than you can imagine: from Africa’s Big Five — lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo — to the massive herds of the Great Migration.

Safari as You Like

Traditionally, in many other places in Africa, safaris take place twice a day at specific times. At Angama Mara, we aim to tailor-make your safari days with you, exploring this unique non-stop extravaganza of astonishing and abundant wildlife, often taking a picnic breakfast or lunch with you. Because the weather is generally mild, there’s never a bad time for a game drive.

Hot Air Balloon Safaris

Enjoy an iconic African experience: a hot-air balloon safari over the Maasai Mara. See the Mara from a different perspective, spot wildlife from above and enjoy the beautiful sunrise all from the basket of a balloon in the sky.

An Unforgettable Experience

  • Gently wake before dawn with freshly-brewed tea or coffee delivered to your tented suite
  • Enjoy the fresh, early morning air on a drive through the Mara to the launch site
  • Watch the awe-inspiring sight of the enormous balloons filling with fired air
  • A quick pre-flight briefing, and before you know it, you’re in the basket, floating effortlessly above the Mara
  • Once you’ve settled back to earth, toastwith a celebratory champagne breakfast under a tree, somewhere in the middle of nowhere
The Great Migration

It is the largest land-based animal migration on the planet — more than a million wildebeest and zebras migrating en-masse on their never-ending journey in search of greener pastures. Most will survive the hazards faced along the way, but hundreds of thousands won’t. This is without a doubt, ‘The Greatest Show on Earth’

The great wildebeest migration

When is the Great Migration?

Contrary to popular belief, the Great Migration isn’t a singular event, but rather a year-long trek, with the mega-herds making a clockwise, round-trip journey of around 600km between the Maasai Mara in Kenya in the north and the southern Serengeti plains in Tanzania, with their travel schedule guided by the seasons and rainfall patterns.

Most often it is the dramatic river crossing scenes that happen in the Maasai Mara National Reserve that are etched into people’s minds. These tend to happen towards the end of July and into August – although like many things in nature, it is completely unpredictable and can change dramatically depending on the whims of the wildebeest. The mega herds of wildebeest, along with zebra and topi will stretch as far as the eye can see across the Mara Triangle offering incredible game viewing as you criss-cross the Reserve from July into early October.

Walking Safari

Discover the wonders of the Great Rift Valley on foot with our Maasai Naturalists who offer guided walks through dappled forest and sunny open areas. Along the way, you’ll learn the traditional ways of the Maasai people and gain from their deep knowledge of the world around them. Slowing down means you get to imbibe the lovely views of the Mara 300 metres below, with glimpses of anything from great herds of buffalo to a solitary elephant melting into the forest.

guided walks

Not Your Usual Walking Safari

  • An expert in bush lore, your Maasai Naturalist will show you how his people interprets and makes use of the animals, birds, plants and the magnificent landscape through which you walk
  • Get to know a few of the plants on the escarpment and their various uses by the Maasai for medicinal and hygiene purposes
  • During your walk, your Naturalist may share stories of his childhood with you, how he grew up to become a warrior, and how he learnt about the world around you
  • The Naturalist is clad in beautiful Maasai warrior regalia complete with headdress and ‘empere’ (spear), ‘engudi’ (peace stick), and ‘orinka’ (talking stick)
The Great Rift on Foot

With no established trail, every walk is different as our Maasai naturalist guide tailors the walk to his guests’ interests and preferences, taking full advantage of the seasons.

An Easy Bumble

One to two hour strolls

Take a short stroll in the vicinity of the lodge, along the Oloololo Escarpment. This is a plateau rich in flora and fauna and well worth exploring. It’s an easy walk, ideal for children, and can be done at any time of the day — although it’s best to go a little earlier before it gets too hot. This is an excellent opportunity to experience the Greater Mara ecosystem at a leisurely and intimate pace.

Dan Davis

During my memorable stay at Angama Mara in September 2015 I went on a ‘bush walk’ with a guide/naturalist named John (his real Maasai name is Neke Peenko). I’d arranged to meet him shortly after breakfast and was fascinated to discover that he was wearing his beautiful Maasai warrior regalia complete with headdress and ‘empere’…

Safari Food  Made to Order

Planning menus, sourcing ingredients, preparing delicious dishes and serving them to our guests in a dazzling choice of settings is what the Angama team loves to do best. No matter the time of day, there’s always something delicious to be had.

angama mara food

Guest Never Go Hungry

  • We serve “classical safari food” — simple yet delicious, fresh and filling, with more than a nod to local Kenyan cuisine (and a bit of Yotam Ottolenghi)
  • Our menu changes every day and is always à la carte. Not a buffet in sight. And the best freshly baked bread on safari — anywhere!
  • We cater to just about all dietaries: vegan, vegetarian, celiac, religious and cultural
  • For those interested in tasting some of our team’s favourite foods, you’ll enjoy our Kenyan platter: nyama choma, ugali and kachumbari
  • If you’re peckish between meals, there’s always a stash of Maasai honey biscuits in your tented suite and a variety of ‘bitings’ (a lovely East African word for snacks) in the evenings — samosas, chicken skewers, crudité and crisps
Sundowner Boma

As the day ends, it’s time to sit back, sip a cocktail and watch the sun descend behind the Rift Valley from the spectacular vantage point of the Sundowner Boma — perfect for this, with its circular shape encapsulating the dramatic views overlooking the Maasai Mara.

sundowner boma

Celebrate Life After Sunset

  • Sip a gin and tonic, a Kenyan Tusker beer, or try a traditional dawa — Swahili for ‘medicine’, this delicious cocktail is Kenya’s unofficial health drink
  • Enjoy the sights and sounds of a Maasai warrior performance of traditional singing, dancing and jumping — or join in
  • Of course there’s delicious party food: samosas and chicken skewers made on the fire and popcorn over the coals, a favourite with children
  • If you are celebrating a special occasion, please let us know so that we can do it Maasai style at the Boma: the celebrant is presented with a beautifully beaded Maasai gift, and the warrior performance is dedicated to them
Photography-Capture the moment

Angama Mara’s Photographic Studio is an exciting workspace of storytelling, teaching and sharing. From photoshoots to camera rentals to tutorials for getting better photographs — these are best ways to remember a safari.

photography

An Offering for Every Guest

  • Through the professional guidance of our on-site team, guests have the opportunity to arrange private complimentary photographic tutorials and editing sessions
  • Hire a photographer to capture memories with you while on safari in the Triangle or overlooking the Mara from the edge of the escarpment
  • Try out some photographic equipment: the Studio has new cameras and lenses available for hire
  • Large-screen Apple desktops, loaded with the latest software, are available for guest use in editing and sharing
  • A professional printer can print your images on paper or canvas — or purchase an image from our collection — to take home
  • You can also enter the Greatest Maasai Mara Photographer of the Year competition or purchase one of their prints, which raises funds for important conservation initiatives in the Mara
Wellness-For Some ‘Me Time’

Aside from discovering the Mara Triangle on safaris and picnics, take some time to explore and enjoy the many places and experiences in and around the lodge. Use up some energy or relax on your deck watching wildlife below and clouds above.

Wellness and relaxation
Ways to Spend your days here
  • Enjoy the comfort of your tented suite with an afternoon siesta or a rocking chair safari – each tent has two comfy bright-red rocking chairs and a pair of binos
  • The rim-flow swimming pool has views of the Mara below and beyond, designed for both families and sun-lovers
  • Indulge in an full-body Swedish massage in-tent on your private deck — or get a fresh mani / pedi
  • If you have energy to burn, there’s the Fitness Room, with floor-to-ceiling glass stacking-doors and ellipticals, treadmills, bicycles, and weights
  • Run with some of the best long-distance runners in the world at almost 2 000m above sea level in our Run with a Kenyan experience
The Maasai-Discover Maasailand

Angama Mara is in the heart of Maasailand, and our journey is interwoven with the Maasai people. There are many moments during your stay where you will meet and interact with Maasai, discovering the many fascinating aspects of their ancient culture.

masai culture

Friends and Neighbours

  • According to their oral history, the Maasai moved south from the Nile region into the Great Rift Valley around 300 years ago, living as nomadic pastoralists in what is today Kenya and Tanzania
  • Despite challenges, the Maasai have retained their traditions and remain a proud and indomitable people: Their tall stature, red shukas and ornate beadwork are among their hallmarks
  • Our landlords who we rent this land from, as well as all of our neighbours, are Maasai
  • The majority of the people at Angama come from local Maasai communities — guides, naturalists, chefs — you’ll get to spend time with them in and around the lodge

For an Occasion

Celebrations-In Masai style

The Angama Mara team loves planning a celebration whatever the occasion. And they do it Maasai style: with beautiful beadwork, dancing warriors, extraordinary backdrops, and of course, the warmest Kenyan hospitality.

celebrations

Any Reason at All

  • Celebrate anything you wish,  from the romantic — an anniversary, a honeymoon — to a major life event or a milestone birthday
  • No matter the occasion, there are different and unique settings to suit: The Pavilion, the Map Room, perhaps an evening at the Boma, or in the
Romance-Write Your Own Love Story

Many of our guests tell us that Out of Africa is their most-loved film of all time – for some this may be why they chose to come to Africa. By a quirk of fate, Angama Mara was built on the same site that many of the most memorable scenes from Out of Africa were filmed. Travel back in time to the Golden Age of safaris and celebrate this treasured piece of literary history.

romance

Relive the Love Story

  • Whether you’re an aficionado or not, you can immerse yourself in all the touchpoints of the novel or film that Angama has to offer
  • Subtle nods to Out of Africa can be found throughout Angama. If you’ve read the novel or watched the film, see if you can find them all scattered around the lodge
  • Even if you’re not familiar with Out of Africa, you’ll enjoy the special movie-related experiences — for example, the private picnic on the Out of Africa kopje, or sundowners on the Saddle featured in the movie’s poster
Family Safari-An All-Age Affair

Going on safari with your children is one of the most transformative experiences a family can share. Watch as the young family members discover the beauty of Africa and the natural world — there is nothing quite like seeing them through the eyes of a child.

Family safari

Something for Everyone

While you’re catching a nap, taking in the view, enjoying a swim or a massage — or taking some romantic time for yourselves — we’ll look after the young members of your family. They’ll have fun learning about nature and customs with the Maasai, picking up new skills in the kitchen, and most importantly making new friends.

Angama’s Wedding Safari

With endless views of the Maasai Mara Reserve, Angama Mara serves as the most beautiful backdrop to your destination wedding, be it a classical ceremony, or a traditional Maasai blessing

angama mara wedding

The team at the safari lodge loves nothing more than planning memorable weddings – always beautifully simple with hints of Maasai culture, overflowing with Kenya’s world-famous roses and views over Africa so wide that your guests will be overwhelmed by the splendour of it all.

We look forward to creating memories that will last a lifetime

From Sunrise To Sunset-

  • Sunrise:A gentle early morning wake up to a cappuccino and freshly baked Maasai honey biscuits placed discreetly by your butler in the lobby of your tent

  • Afternoon:Wander through the Shamba (kitchen garden) picking and tasting the leaves and fruits along the way. Relax with some chilled rosé wine under the giant moth trees
